Battery Technology put to use in Renewable Energy sector

The level of global renewable energy production capacity increased by 8.7% in 2016. During the same period, the world’s new capacity for solar energy reached 71 gigawatts. On top of this the capacity for Wind energy and hydropower had 51 GW and 31 GW. This means that overall there is 153 GW of renewable energy that is available to power more than 100 million homes.

There are a number of challenges in regards to improving how reliable renewable energy sourcing is. With Solar panels and wind turbines only operating effectively on sunny or windy days. When the weather is not ideal for energy generation, battery technology is put to good use, storing the extra solar and wind energy captured on good weather days to be used on cloudy or non-windy days.

In order to become more sustainable, it is essential that the use of renewable energy is increased. With the improvements to battery technology allowing more energy to be stored and boosts the uptake of renewable energy sources as the batteries improve the dependability of the energy source. More energy consumers will be inclined to use renewable systems when they have confidence in its reliability. Therefore, it is essential to demonstrate the reliability of renewable energy sources in order to boost sustainability.

Battery technology has been used to power various equipment for a long period of time. This process has been adapted to renewable energy storage due to a number of impacting factors. The world’s production capacity for renewable energy has increased, therefore it is important to have a storage system in place in order to help meet future demands regardless of any fluctuations.

The Battery technology has also been developed with the Paris Agreement in mind. This commitment includes working to keep global warming below 2℃ in relation to pre-industrial levels, which requires the increase in renewable energy facilities while retiring coal plants. Battery technology works to maintain the stability of renewable energy facilities. Research has found that 30% of the world’s population don’t have access to electricity. With the cost and time associated with building power lines it is more efficient to use batteries, meaning that the requirement to expand and modernize energy infrastructure Batteries can also be used as microgrids during periods where the centralized grid architecture is damaged or wiped out by a natural or man-made disaster.
