Women in Engineering Day on Thursday celebrated the industry’s continuing progression to becoming more diverse.
The annual special day for women in the industry highlights their work in the field and challenges the traditional stereotypes to encourage more young women to make their way into engineering.
The Women’s Engineering Society say that just 9% of the engineering workforce are women and that the UK has the lowest percentage of women engineering professionals in Europe.
However, the Institute of Engineering and Technology last year conducted research that revealed half of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) enrolments at university are women, with more than 30% of those being made up of computer science, technology and engineering undergraduates.
Furthermore, Mars UK has marked the occasion by producing two case studies of its female apprentices who have gone on to graduate and become female head engineers at Mars Petcare and Mars Chocolate.
One of these is Sarah Sordy who is Plant Manager at the Mars Petcare site in Birstall, Yorkshire.
At the site, she leads a 240 strong team in the manufacture of world-renowned pet care and treat products, such as PEDIGREE® Dentastix and PEDIGREE® Schmakos.
Having completed her degree in Mechanical Engineering at Birmingham University, Sarah began her career at Mars Petcare on the firm’s two-year graduate engineering programme.
Following this, she moved onto a full-time project-engineering role at the Marsâ wet pet food site in Melton Mowbray. Here, she was promoted all the way through the engineering team to take up the post of Chief Engineer.
In 2012, Sarah was offered the role of Operations Manager at the Birstall site, and in April this year became the site’s Plant Manager.
Meanwhile, Becky Shering joined Mars Chocolate UK in September 2014 as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer having completed a four-year degree at the University of Bath.
Beckyâs degree also featured a year in industry, a year she spent working in a factory and she says it was this experience that inspired her to join Mars.
